Bay Street stocks were little changed at open Friday amid buying in gold stocks, with the S&P/TSX Composite Index edging up 21.34 points or 0.17 percent to 12,383.15..
The Global Gold Index added 0.75 percent, with Kirkland Lake Gold (KGI.TO) gaining nearly 3 percent. Allied Nevada Gold (ANV.TO), Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM.TO) and Seabridge Gold (SEA.TO) moved up around 2 percent each.
Silver Wheaton (SLW.TO) gained nearly 3 percent after reporting much improved fourth quarter net earnings.
In the oil patch, Niko Resources (NKO.TO) gained 4 percent, while Celtic Exploration (CLT.TO) was losing nearly 3 percent.
NAL Energy Corp (NAE.TO) rose nearly 6 percent after it said it would be acquired by Pengrowth Energy (PGF.TO) for about $1.90 billion. Shares of Pengrowth lost 2 percent.
