Leung Chun-ying was appointed as the new chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) on Wednesday. He would take office on July 1.
Leung was appointed to the post for the fourth time by China's State Council (Cabinet) after he won Sunday's election with 689 votes of the 1,132 votes cast by members of the 1,200-member Election Committee of Hong Kong.
Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, who presided over the State Council meeting, said the election was conducted in line with the Basic Law and relevant laws of the HKSAR and its result showed that Hong Kong society had recognition, trust and expectation for Leung.
He said the central government would firmly implement the principle of "One country, Two systems, Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" with a high degree of autonomy, and fully support the work of the HKSAR government and its chief executive, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The central government will support Hong Kong's government to manage risks and challenges from the international economy, and maintain the economic stability and prosperity of Hong Kong, Wen said.
