Romania Visible Trade Deficit Widens In February

Romania's merchandise trade deficit increased from last year in February, preliminary data released by the National Institute of Statistics showed Monday.

The trade deficit increased to EUR511.7 million in February from EUR411.1 million in the same month last year. In January, the trade balance was a deficit of EUR460 million.

Export of goods edged down 0.4 percent on an annual basis to EUR3.508 billion in February. The value of shipments to European Union (EU) countries dropped 0.3 percent annually, while shipments to countries outside the EU advanced 2.2 percent.

Imports advanced 2.2 percent from last year to EUR4.020 billion during the month. Imports from the EU nations rose 3.2 percent year-on-year, while arrivals from non-EU countries dropped 0.7 percent

In the January-February period, Romania's trade balance was a deficit of EUR970.2 million, higher than the EUR622.4 million deficit recorded in the same period a year earlier. Export of goods increased 0.6 percent during the two-month period, while imports rose 5.1 percent.
