Frequent dental X-Rays, especially in childhood, could increase the risk of brain tumors, according to new data collected by researchers at the Yale School of Medicine and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
According to lead researcher Elizabeth B. Claus of Yale, those who receive dental X-Rays once a year or more are between 1.4 and 1.9 times more likely to develop meningiomas, or tumors in the system of membranes enveloping the central nervous system.
Claus and her team reviewed health and dental records of 1,433 tumor patients between the ages of 20 and 79 diagnosed between 2006 and 2011.
"The current study is well-done and confirms that even in the 'modern era' radiation exposure from repeated dental X-rays conveys an increased risk of these tumors," peer reviewer Dr. David Schiff, co-director of the University of Virginia Neuro-Oncology Center, told ABC News.
