Researchers at the University of Delaware have found taking soy supplements may be effective for reducing hot flashes in menopausal women.
This form of treatment has been controversial for years but now Dr. Melissa Melby and her team say soy could be the answer.
Melby and her team reviewed data from 19 independent studies including over 1,200 hundred women across the world. They found women using soy products, especially with elevated levels of an isoflavone called genistein, were twice as likely to report a reduce in hot flashes.
"For many women with symptoms and especially with concerns about hormone replacement therapy, trying soy for six to 12 weeks to see if it relieves their symptoms could be a first line of treatment," Melby told WebMD.com.
"What this study shows is that ingesting soy isoflavones will help you," she said. "I personally think foods [containing soy] are better."
