Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili arrived in the Turkish city of Istanbul on Friday for talks with major world powers over his country's disputed nuclear program, Turkish media reported.
Jalili will be meeting with representatives from the group of P5+1 consisting of the U.S., Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany for the talks scheduled for Saturday.
Iranian officials had earlier suggested that the venue of the talks be moved from Istanbul to alternative venues, such as Baghdad, Damascus or China, amid tensions between Turkey and Iran over Syria. The Iranian call for a change of venue just days before the talks angered Turkey with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan accusing Iranian officials of dishonesty.
The first round of talks between Iran and the P5+1 held in Istanbul in January 2011 failed to produce any agreement.
Iran insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful purpose, but the West suspects that the Islamic Republic is trying to develop nuclear weapons by enriching uranium at its nuclear facilities.
