The race for Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords', D-Ariz., former House seat is likely to heat up following the results of Tuesday's primary elections.
Giffords, who was critically injured in an assassination attempt last year, resigned from Congress earlier this year to concentrate on her ongoing recovery.
Jesse Kelly, an Iraq war veteran who unsuccessfully challenged Giffords in 2010, won the Republican special election primary.
Kelly defeated three GOP opponents, state Sen. Frank Antenori, retired U.S. Air Force pilot Martha McSally, and sports broadcaster Dave Sitton.
In the general election, Kelly will face Democrat Ron Barber, a former top Giffords aide who was also injured in the January 8, 2011, shooting that killed six people. Giffords has given her support to Barber, who did not have any opposition in the Democratic primary.
The general election for Arizona's 8th Congressional seat will be held on June 12, 2012.
