Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani formally endorsed presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Monday despite years of animosity between the two stemming from the 2008 GOP presidential primary.
While Giuliani had previously expressed support for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, he said Romney has clinched the Republican nomination "fair and square" in an interview Monday on "Fox and Friends."
"He's proven he's the most effective Republican," Giuliani said of Romney. "He's taken on everybody and won an incredible number of primaries, and he's got the resume and background for the job."
Giuliani acknowledged his past disputes with Romney but said he decided to support the former Massachusetts Gov.'s latest run for president following a long meeting between the two last week.
At the same time, Giuliani downplayed the possibility that he would be considered as a potential vice presidential candidate, saying, "I'm not on the list for running mate. I'm sure of that."
Following the interview, Romney released a statement saying he is "very proud to earn the support of such a distinguished leader and public servant to our country."
Romney added, "I look forward to his help in the months ahead as I work to restore America's promise and reverse President Obama's failed policies."
