Spanish police said late on Tuesday that they had busted a human-trafficking ring engaged in smuggling Iranians to Britain and arrested 22 suspected ring members and recovered several forged passports in the process.

According to Spanish police officials, the ring charged each of the migrants up to EUR 20,000 for smuggling them to Britain via Spain's Canary Islands.

They said the migrants were either flown to Britain using forged documents or smuggled into the UK by hiding them in freight containers on trucks as well as luggage compartments of buses.

The mastermind of the human trafficking operation as well as most of its members were said to be of Iranian origin. The 22 suspected ring-members, including its leader, were arrested in simultaneous raids carried out in Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Madrid.

Local media reports said the police launched an investigation in November after a suspect was arrested while trying to board a plane from Tenerife to the UK with forged identification papers. They added that Spanish investigation was carried out in coordination with the UK Border Agency.
