A soldier of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was killed in a militant attack in southern Afghanistan on Monday.
An ISAF statement did not reveal the nationality of the victims as per ISAF policy to defer casualty identification procedures to the relevant national authorities.
With this, the number of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan this year rose to 137.
A separate ISAF press release said Afghan National Army Special Forces, with specialized skills in engineering and improvised explosive devices, partnered with coalition Special Operations Forces on a reconnaissance mission and found a large cache of bomb making materials in the Panjwai district of Kandahar last week.
The well-trained ANASF soldiers led the mission to disrupt insurgent fighters who have been intimidating locals in the area and arming IEDs. While conducting a cordon search, the security forces encountered a group of insurgents who were continuing to arm IEDs, threatening the lives of local villagers. The ANASF engaged the insurgents, killing two of them.
Six IEDs and three large caches of bomb making materials, including RC trigger devices, counter-lift devices, homemade explosives, pressure plates, wire and PMN mines were confiscated. The amount of materials found could have resulted in multiple roadside bombs being made, potentially killing or maiming innocent children in the area, ISAF said.
