Afghan and coalition security forces have arrested one of the masterminds of a suicide attack on a district police headquarters in southern Afghanistan that killed eight policemen on April 10.
An ISAF Joint Command operational update did not name the Taliban leader, who was taken into custody along with several of his associates during an operation in Washer district, Helmand province, on Tuesday.
The leader was a senior Taliban insurgent in Kajaki district, responsible for roadside bombings, suicide attacks and other operations against Afghan and coalition security forces in Helmand province. He attempted to implement Taliban law on Afghan civilians and operated a Taliban prison, ISAF says.
Another Taliban leader was killed in an encounter with Afghan-led and coalition supported security forces during an operation in Qarghah'i district in the eastern province of Laghman. The leader coordinated roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout the province. During the operation, the leader and one additional insurgent fired on the security force. The force returned fire, killing the attackers. The security force also detained multiple additional insurgents and confiscated several small arms weapons.
Many militants were killed in a precision airstrike by Afghan and coalition security force during an operation to capture a Haqqani leader in Muhammad Aghah district, Logar province. The security forces resorted to airstrike as several insurgents opened fire when they surrounded the building in which the militants were hiding in.
Several insurgents were detained in similar operations in Imam Sahib district, Kunduz province, and in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province.
A Taliban leader who planned and supervised roadside bombings against Afghan and coalition security forces throughout central Helmand province was captured during a joint operation in Washer district on Tuesday, said the ISAF press release.
