Israel's public broadcaster has built an underground studio in the northern city of Haifa that will allow the station to remain on-air in the event of an emergency.
The Israel Broadcasting Authority (IBA) opened the new facility to media persons on Monday. The TV studio is located seven meters below the ground and has 30-centimeter-thick concrete walls. It is equipped with a radio booth and a control room that sends out broadcast signals.
IBA decided to build the underground studio bunker after it was forced to suspend live broadcasting when a shell landed near its Haifa bureau during the 2006 fighting with Hezbollah, the Shia Muslim group in Lebanon.
The Israeli government has recently threatened to launch a pre-emptive military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities as it suspects that the Islamic Republic is trying to build nuclear weapons under its disputed uranium enrichment activities.
IBA Director-General Yoni Ben-Menachem was quoted in media reports as saying that the bunker studio is part of the network's efforts to become better prepared for any emergency situation. The state-run broadcaster plans to set up similar studios in three more cities.
