Mary Richardson Kennedy, the estranged second wife of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. was found dead at her Westchester home Wednesday night in an apparent suicide. Multiple sources are reporting she hanged herself in an "out building" on the Kennedy home property.
Mary Kennedy married the son of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of President John F. Kennedy in 1994 only a month after his first marriage of 12 years ended. After rumors of Robert Jr.'s cheating after this marriage, Mary turned to drugs and alcohol.
The couple became estranged in 2010 after a domestic incident when Mary was reportedly intoxicated. Twice more in that year, Mary was arrested for drunk driving and driving while under the influence of drugs. Although Robert filed for divorce, the couple was still legally married but separated. The couple have four children together.
Mary was found Wednesday by a housekeeper, ABC reported. Police were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. to respond to a "possible unattended death."
The Kennedy family, long plagued by sudden and tragic deaths, issued a statement saying, "We deeply regret the death of our beloved sister Mary, whose radiant and creative spirit will be sorely missed by those who loved her...Our heart goes out to her children, who she loved without reservation. We have no further comment at this time."
