Cases of diabetes among adolescents have seen a substantial increase over the past decade, according to a study published in the June issue of the journal Pediatrics.

At the same time, a new Centers for Disease Control/National Institutes of Health study found that the overall mortality rate among diabetes sufferers has dropped.

The study published in Pediatrics found that 23 percent of adolescents had diabetes or prediabetes in 2008 compared to just 9 percent in 1999.

The jump in the prevalence of diabetes or prediabetes came even though the prevalence of obesity did not increase during the study period.

Meanwhile, the CDC/NIH found that deaths among adult diabetes sufferers are down 23 percent from 1997 to 2006.

Diabetes sufferers saw a particularly steep 40 percent drop in deaths related to heart disease and stroke, according to the study.

"Taking care of your heart through healthy lifestyle choices is making a difference, but Americans continue to die from a disease that can be prevented," said Ann Albright, director of the CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation.

She added, "Although the cardiovascular disease death rate for people with diabetes has dropped, it is still twice as high as for adults without diabetes."
