A Tibetan died on Friday after he set himself on fire in north-west China in protest against Beijing's rule in Tibet.
U.S.-based rights group International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) identified the man as Tamdin Thar, whom it said was in "his forties or fifties."
Tibetan from a nomad family, set fire to himself in front of the People's Armed Police base in Jianza county town in Qinghai province on Friday morning.
Armed police tried to extinguish the flames as Tamdin Thar lay on the ground, and he was then taken away in a vehicle by security forces. According to Tibetan sources in exile in touch with Tibetans in the area, he died within hours. The police returned the body to local people after they gathered in the town, ICT said.
Chinese official media confirmed the incident.
Hundreds of Tibetans gathered for the cremation of Tamdin Thar, who was the 39th Tibetan to have self-immolated since February 27, 2009 challenging rule by Beijing and calling for the return of exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
