Drinking two cups of coffee daily could help lower your risk for heart problems, a study published in Circulation Heart Failure on Tuesday, June 26, stated. Previous studies have emphasized the dangers to the heart of coffee consumption, but this new study says in moderation, it may be beneficial.
Researchers from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and Harvard School of Public Health in Boston found compared with drinking no coffee at all, those who drank two 8-ounce American servings per day (four European sized cups) had an 11 percent lower risk of heart failure. The study surveyed 140,220 participants who had a total of 6,522 heart failure events.
"Since high blood pressure is a risk factor for many types of cardiovascular disease, researchers assumed that coffee would be harmful," Dr. Murray Mittleman, senior study author, told to ABC News.
"But several studies have shown that although there is an increase in blood pressure shortly after consumption, there are health benefits over the long term."
