A moderate earthquake of 5.3-magnitude shook Iran's north-eastern province of Khorasan Razavi early on Monday. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, state media reported.

Iran's Seismological Center said the quake struck at 2:31 a.m. (local time) on Monday jolting Qasem Abad village in the province, located about 850 kilometers (500 miles) north-east of Iranian capital Tehran. Four aftershocks, one having a magnitude of 3.9, also struck the region.

Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes, experiencing at least one slight tremor a day on average.

Some 27,000 people were killed and 30,000 injured when a 6.6-magnitude earthquake shook the historic city of Bam in south-eastern Iran nine years ago.
