Czech Retail Sales Fall Less Than Expected In May

Retail Sales in the Czech Republic decreased at a slower pace in May, and the rate of fall came in below economists' forecast, data released by the Czech Statistical Office showed Wednesday.

Retail sales volume, on a non-adjusted basis and including automotive segment , decreased 2.1 percent year-on-year in May, slower than the 3.5 percent fall economists expected. In April, the rate of decline was 3 percent, which was revised down from 4.1 percent.

Sales and repair of automobiles fell by 6.4 percent annually during the month, while sales of food, beverages and tobacco edged down 0.4 percent. There was a 1.8 percent year-on-year decrease in retail sales of automotive fuel during the month, and a 0.9 percent gain in sales of non-food products, the agency said.

Month-on-month, retail sales increased a seasonally adjusted 1 percent in May. In the January-May period, trade moved up 0.5 percent from the corresponding period a year earlier, data showed.
