Poland's current account shortfall increased from the previous month in May, defying economists' forecast for a decrease, data released by the National Bank of Poland showed Friday.
The current account deficit increased to EUR815 million in May from EUR713 million in April. Economists had forecast the shortfall to narrow to EUR232 million.
The goods trade account showed a deficit of EUR933 million, higher than the EUR398 million deficit recorded in the previous month. The services account, meanwhile, showed a surplus of EUR316 million, lower than April's EUR465 million.
The shortfall in the income account widened to EUR1.39 billion from EUR1.31 billion. The current transfers account was in a surplus of EUR1.19 billion in May, sharply above April's EUR525 million surplus, data showed.
