The FDA gave their approval on Thursday to a new ingestible medical monitor that will allow doctors to collect information on their patients from the inside out.
The sensor, built by Proteus Digital Health's new Ingestion Event Marker, is roughly the size of a grain of sand and can be administered by placement on a pill or food. It is then powered by acids in the stomach and sends back information to a receiver patch worn on the patient's skin. It can collect information including heart rate, body position and activity.
"We are thrilled to have achieved this important milestone to market our ingestible sensor in the United States now, as well as in Europe," Dr. George M. Savage, co-founder and chief medical officer at Proteus Digital Health, said in the press release.
"We are very much looking forward to bringing the benefits of our ingestible sensor to the American public in the form of innovative product offerings."
