Two men were executed in Japan on Friday after being convicted of murder in separate cases.
One of the executed was a 40-year-old construction worker who kidnapped a 19-year-old college student and burned her to death in Shizuoka prefecture in early 2002. The second man who went to the gallows was a 31-year-old unemployed man for killing two of his relatives and stealing money in Kyoto in Kanagawa prefecture in early 2007, Japanese media reported.
Friday's executions take to five the number of people executed this year in Japan where 130 convicts are on the death row. They include Aum Shinrikyo cult founder Chizuo Matsumotom alias Shoko Asahara. He masterminded a series of crimes, including the 1995 sarin gas attack in Tokyo that killed 13 people and sickened about 6,300. Japan executed 15 death-row inmates in 2008.
