Earnings Watch For August 6 (TSN, THQI, VNO, CHK, CTSH)

Meat products maker Tyson Foods Inc. (TSN: Quote) is expected to report results for the third quarter before the market opens today. The company is expected to earn $0.54 per share on revenues of $8.72 billion, while in the year-ago quarter, earnings and revenue were $0.46 per share and $8.25 billion respectively. The shares closed Friday at $15.40. (The stock dropped around 1% in Q3; MA(50)- $17.49; MA(100)- $18.17; 52-wk H/L $21.06/$14.62)

THQ Inc. (THQI: Quote) is due to post first-quarter results after the market closes today. The company is expected to report a loss of $3.97 per share versus loss of $9.40 per share last year, on revenues of $29.31 million. Shares of THQI closed Friday's trade at $5.00. (The stock rose almost 11% in Q1; MA(50)- $5.84; MA(100)- $5.96; 52-wk H/L $25.10/$4.50)

Vornado Realty Trust (VNO: Quote) is scheduled to report second-quarter results after closing of the market. The company is expected to post earnings of $0.95 per share, lower than the year-ago quarter's $1.27 per share. Also, the company is anticipated to generate revenues of $651.71 million compared to $730.15 million in the prior-year quarter. The company's shares closed Friday's session at $85.65. (The stock up about 1% in Q2; MA(50)- $82.78; MA(100)- $83.45; 52-wk H/L $88.50/$68.39)

Natural gas producer Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK: Quote) is slated to report results for the second quarter. Earnings and revenue for the quarter are expected to be $0.08 per share and $2.44 billion respectively. In the same quarter a year earlier, the company posted earnings of $0.76 per share on revenues of $3.32 billion. The stock closed Friday at $17.89. (The stock declined nearly 19% in Q2; MA(50)- $17.98; MA(100)- $18.80; 52-wk H/L $33.87/$13.32)

Prior to opening of the market, Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp. (CTSH: Quote) will post second-quarter results today. The IT, consulting, and BPO services provider is expected to report earnings of $0.80 per share compared to $0.67 per share a year ago, with revenues estimated at $1.79 billion. The company's shares closed Friday's regular trading at $57.86. (The stock down about 22% in Q2; MA(50)- $58.21; MA(100)- $64.59; 52-wk H/L $78.00/$53.54)

AES Corp. (AES), HCA Holdings, Inc. (HCA), Goodrich Petroleum Corp. (GDP), Manitowoc Co., Inc. (MTW), TW Telecom Inc. (TWTC), WMS Industries Inc. (WMS) and Quest Software Inc. (QSFT) are also due to report their results today.

China's manufacturing sector contracted for the first time in seven months in May amid poor demand, fueling concerns that the weakness in the economy may persist for some more time. The headline purchasing managers' index, an indicator of the health of the factory sector, fell to a seven-month low of 49.6 in May from 50.4 in April. Readings below 50 indicate contraction of the sector. Hewlett-Packard Co. said Wednesday after the markets closed that its second quarter profit fell 32% from last year, hurt by lower revenue and weaker margins amid a slump in PC sales. However, the company's quarterly earnings per share, excluding items, came in above analysts' expectations, but its quarterly revenue fell short of analysts' forecast. Stocks showed a substantial downturn over the course of the trading day on Wednesday after seeing some strength in morning trading. Renewed worries about the Federal Reserve tapering its asset purchase program contributed to the sharp pullback by the markets. The major averages climbed off their worst levels going into the close but still ended the day firmly negative.
