Japan and China have agreed to launch 47 projects including the creation of a "smart city" as part of cooperation in promoting environment-friendly and power-saving projects in the context of China's increased energy needs.

About 1,000 government officials and business executives from both the countries met in Tokyo on Monday at the seventh annual conference for the promotion of bilateral cooperation for green technology.

It was agreed at the conference that a Japanese firm will co-develop an electric car with a Chinese university as part of promoting green technology.

Addressing the gathering, Japanese Industry Minister Yukio Edano said Japan's environmental technologies could help China conserve energy. Calling for greater cooperation in promoting green technology, he said the partnerships could also spur technological advances.

Zhang Ping, Director of China's National Development and Reform Commission, said his country planned to engage in more discussions with Japan. He said power efficiency and environmental protection were areas for growth in terms of economic cooperation.

Industry Ministry officials are planning to help Japan's environment-related companies enter the Chinese market where demand for eco-friendly technology is high.
