Malaysia's exports grew more than expected in June from the prior year, data from the Trade Ministry showed Wednesday.

Exports advanced 5.4 percent annually, compared to the consensus forecast of 3.1 percent. But the rate of growth slowed from 6.7 percent seen a month ago.

At the same time, annual growth in imports slowed sharply to 3.6 percent from 16.2 percent, and well below the 8.8 percent increase forecast by economists.

The trade surplus totaled MYR 9.2 billion, better than the expected MYR 5.63 billion surplus. The trade with People's Republic of China grew 16.9 percent and that with Japan climbed 13.5 percent.

During January to June, exports rose 4.2 percent to MYR 351.2 billion, while imports grew 8 percent to MYR 300.1 billion.
