German Employment Rises Further In Q2

Employment in Germany increased further in the second quarter, though at a slower pace compared to the preceding quarter, preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office showed Thursday.

The number of persons in employment, whose place of employment is in Germany, increased 1.3 percent on an annual basis to 41.587 million in the second quarter, slightly slower than the 1.4 percent gain recorded in the first quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2011, a 1.3 percent growth was recorded.

The service sector accounted for nearly three quarters of the annual increase in employment. In construction, the number of persons in employment rose 1.1 percent year-on-year during the three-month period.

Compared to the first quarter, after eliminating usual seasonal fluctuations, the number of employed increased by 0.2 percent. On and unadjusted basis, employment rose 1 percent sequentially during the quarter.

Meanwhile, the average number of hours worked per person in employment decreased 0.3 percent annually to 331.8 hours in the second quarter, data showed.
