The Danish government Tuesday appointed ATP chief Lars Rohde as governor of the country's central bank. He will be succeeding Nils Bernstein who is scheduled to retire at the end of January 2013.

Rohde, who currently serves as director of Denmark's largest pension fund ATP, will assume office on 1, February, 2013. As the head of the Nationalbank's three-member board of governors, Rohde, 58, will mainly focus on keeping the monetary policy on track and maintaining the country's strong position with regard to international investment.

"Lars Rohde is very suitable for solving the tasks that the National Bank is facing," Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt said. "Lars Rohde has extensive knowledge and experience in the National Bank's responsibilities, and he is widely recognized for his work as director of ATP."

From 1982 to 1985, Rohde had served the Nationalbank as an economist. In 1985, he became head of a doctors' pension and later served mortgage bank Realkredit in various positions between 1989 and 1998.

Bernstein, who has been serving the central bank for about seven years, is stepping down on reaching the retirement age.
