Warner Bros. has reportedly turned down the opportunity to release a film franchise of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower." Rights to the franchise include three films and the possibility of two television series.
According to various sources, Warner Bros. took interest in the series after Universal decided to give other studios a crack at the project. Warner Bros. initially showed interest, due in part to a commitment to the franchise from director Ron Howard. Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman, and Oscar-winning producer Brian Grazer have both previously been linked to the project.
Warner Bros. cold feet are reportedly due to budget concerns, as it would appear all of the other pieces are in place for the film's success. Javier Bardem was initially slated to play the story's gun slinging lead Roland Deschain. He has since stepped down and will be replaced by Russell Crowe.
