After being outraised by Republican challenger Mitt Romney for three straight months, President Barack Obama finally won the campaign fundraising battle in August.

Obama's re-election campaign and combined committees raised $114 million in August, topping the $111.6 million raised by the Romney campaign and supporting committees.

The Obama campaign said 1.17 million people donated to the campaign during the month, including 317,954 first-time donors.

Additionally, the campaign said 98 percent of donations in August were $250 or less, with an average donation of $58.31.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said, "The key to fighting back against the special interests writing limitless checks to support Mitt Romney is growing our donor base, and we did substantially in the month of August."

Meanwhile, the Romney campaign said that 94 percent of the donations received in August were $250 or less. The campaign also said it has approximately $168.5 million in cash on hand.

In a joint statement, Romney Victory National Finance Chairman Spencer Zwick and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said, "Americans are not better off than they were four years ago and they are looking for a change of leadership."

"Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are offering bold solutions to our country's problems - that is why we are seeing such tremendous support from donors across the country," Zwick and Priebus added.

Along with beating Romney in August fundraising, Obama also got some good news from the latest Gallup daily tracking poll. The poll showed Obama leading Romney by 49 percent to 44 percent.
