Afghan and coalition security forces arrested the senior leader of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) for Kunduz province in Qal'ah-ye Zal district on Wednesday.

Security forces were attacked when they approached the IMU leader's location. An insurgent was killed and the IMU leader arrested in the counter-attack, the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Joint Command said in an operational update.

The detained IMU senior leader is believed to have directed insurgent activity for Kunduz province, including the financing, manning, and provision of weapons and equipment for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces.

He also provided training and direction to IMU insurgents operating in Kunduz, resulting in several attacks using IEDs (improvised explosive devices).

Security forces also detained four suspected insurgents as a result of the operation.

Separately, one of the Haqqani leaders behind the August 7 attack on a coalition base in Logar province was killed by Afghan-coalition forces in a security operation in Pul-e 'Alam district, Logar, on Monday.

The Haqqani leader Hemat maneuvered from the compound and opened fire on the Afghan and coalition troops. Security forces returned fire, killing him. Hemat was suspected of having supplied suicide-bombers with essential equipment for the August 7 attack, which wounded several Afghan civilians, but failed to cause any significant damage to the coalition base.

Hemat was believed to have been acquiring and stockpiling several IEDs for future attacks. Security forces also seized multiple firearms and destroyed several kilograms of explosives during the operation, the ISAF statement said.
