Dozens of people were killed in the latest in a series of fighting between rival farming communities in southern Kenya on Friday, news agency reports said.
While media reported up to 39 casualties, Kenya Red Cross, which has a team on the ground treating the injured, put the death toll at 30 including women and children.
Farmers of the Pokomo tribe attacked members of the semi-nomadic herdsmen of the Orma tribe in the Kipao village in the coastal Tana River district in the early hours of Friday using firearms, spears, machetes and arrows, Coast Region deputy police chief Robert Kitur told reporters.
Police suspect it as an apparent revenge attack to deadly clashes in August and September between the two communities, traditional rivals, which killed more than 100 villagers.
Several houses were also burnt in the attack, the Kenya Red Cross said.
BBC reports the arrest of Assistant Livestock Minister Dhadho Godhana, who represents the region in the Parliament, on charge of inciting violence.
