More than 50,000 American gun enthusiasts have endorsed a petition seeking the deportation of British CNN talkshow host Piers Morgan over his derogatory remarks on television about the gun culture in the United States.

"British Citizen and CNN television host Piers Morgan is engaged in a hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution by targeting the Second Amendment," the petition read.

"We demand that Mr. Morgan be deported immediately for his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens," it added.

More than 53,000 Americans have endorsed the petition since it was posted on the White House website. Notably, a petition requires the endorsement of only 25,000 U.S. citizens to get a response from the government.

The petition is titled "Deport British Citizen Piers Morgan for Attacking the 2nd Amendment." It was posted after Morgan openly advocated for gun control in the U.S. during an interview with Larry Pratt, Director of Gun Owners of America. The campaign was initiated by a journalist in Texas.

The interview was held five days after 26 people, including 20 children, were killed in a shooting spree at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14. The incident has intensified a raging debate in the United States about the need for gun control.

During the interview, Morgan described Pratt as an "incredibly stupid man" after the latter said tighter controls on gun sales would not end tragedies like the one in Newtown. Morgan ended the interview by telling Pratt: "You have absolutely no coherent argument. You don't actually give a damn about the gun murder rate in America."

The interview had triggered an outrage among gun enthusiasts in the United States. But it did not have any effect on Morgan, who continued to criticize the American gun culture and advocate for gun control in the United States.

Soon after the number of petitioners calling for his deportation crossed the 25,000 threshold, Morgan tweeted: "If I do get deported from America for wanting fewer gun murders, are there any other countries that will have me?"

He added: "Wanting America to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines isn't anti-constitutional - it's called 'common sense.' Ironic U.S. gun rights campaign to deport me for 'attacking Second Amendment rights' - is my opinion not protected under 1st Amendment rights?"

Incidentally, the Newtown shooting was the second deadliest shooting incident at a U.S. school after a mentally-deranged South Korean student gunned down 32 people before killing himself at the Virginia Tech university in April 2007.

President Barack Obama has since picked Vice-President Joe Biden to lead a new commission tasked with determining what steps the nation should take to avoid such tragedies. Notably, Biden, a former Delaware Senator, was one of the authors of a 1994 bill that banned the sale of assault weapons in the U.S. But that ban that has since expired.

Nevertheless, the pro-gun National Rifle Association (NRA) has rejected calls for tighter gun control in the United States, and accused advocates for gun control of politicizing the Newtown shooting. It also proposed posting armed security guards in all of the nation's schools to avoid such tragedies, stressing that efforts to ban firearms in schools was the worst possible response to school shootings.
