China has officially opened the world's longest high-speed rail system. The new trains will cut the trip from Beijing to Guangzhou in the south in half, allowing travelers to arrive in roughly eight hours.

The line will span a total of 2,298 kilometer and opened on Wednesday when trains left from both Beijing and Guangzhou. The line will make various stops along the way including Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Changsha. Topping out at over 180 mph, the trains will likely revolutionize train travel for Chinese passengers.

About 150 trips will be made between the two cities each day and massive expansion of the system is planned by 2020. By that time the Chinese Ministry of the Railway hopes to have four complete North and South lines and four East and West lines.
