Facebook has now started rolling out free voice calling in the U.S. through its Messenger application for iPhone. The new feature is under testing and is being offered to only a limited number of users at the moment.

The feature was first introduced in Canada earlier this month and had proven to be a success. Some users will now find a "free calling button" in their applications. By clicking on that, they can make free calls to other users who have the Messenger for iPhone installed in their devices. Android and Windows Phone users will have to wait for the feature to make it to their platforms.

Even though the feature is free, it doesn't necessarily mean so because you still need a data connection, unless you're making calls using a Wi-Fi connection. If you're using the 3G or 4G connection, one will have to pay the service provider for data usage as per the plan.

VoIP calling is nothing new, but what makes this feature special is that since Facebook is the biggest source for all your contacts, it is very convenient for you to slide down your friend list to select and make calls.

The company hasn't given out more details about their new offering. However, it's safe to bet on that Android and Windows Phone Messenger apps will receive this feature soon.
