Scarlett Johansson's turn as sexpot Maggie in a recent Broadway revival of the Tennessee Williams classic, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," has been getting a mixed reception from critics.
According to the New York Times, the Johansson was made for the theater:
"Ms. Johansson confirms her promise as a stage actress of imposing presence and adventurous intelligence."
The New York Daily News, however, was not as complimentary: "Johansson is alarmingly one-note . . . her voice is raspy and lacks vitality; it has the musicality of a foghorn."
Finally, the Financial Times said Johansson compares favorably to Kathleen Turner, who nabbed a Tony nod with the role in 1990:
"Johansson delivers a Maggie with a whisky voice. The huskiness comes as a surprise in one so young, and cues us that her voice may be headed the way of Kathleen Turner's."
