All the 20 people on board a domestic flight operated by Kazakhstan's SCAT airline are feared to have been killed after their aircraft crashed near the Central Asian country's commercial capital Almaty on Tuesday.
Russia's Interfax news agency quoted SCAT airline as saying in a statement that the ill-fated aircraft was on its way to Almaty from the northern city of Kokshetau when it went down in the village of Kyzyl Tu near Almaty.
The airline said there were 15 passengers and five crew-members on board the aircraft when the accident occurred close to the border with neighboring Kyrgyzstan.
Nevertheless, the SCAT airline did not specify the type of aircraft involved in the crash or what caused the accident. But local media reported thick fog in the area where the plane crashed.
Incidentally, it was the second such plane crash in the former Soviet Republic in just over a month. It comes after a military transport plane crashed in bad weather near the southern city of Shymkent near the border with Uzbekistan on December 25, killing all 27 people on board.
