Latvia's Unemployment Rate Rises To 13.8% In Q4

Latvia's unemployment rate increased sequentially in the fourth quarter, data released by the Central Statistical Bureau showed Thursday.

The unemployment rate increased to 13.8 percent in the fourth quarter from 13.5 percent in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the jobless rate was 15 percent.

The unemployment rate among youth, aged between 15 and 24, came in at 21.6 percent during the quarter, which was 6 percentage points less than a year earlier.

The total number of unemployed persons in the country decreased by 10,400 from a year earlier to around 144,600 in the fourth quarter.

The employment rate, meanwhile, edged down to 57.3 percent in the fourth quarter from 57.5 percent a year earlier. There were around 902,300 employed persons in the country during the period, higher than 876,700 recorded a year earlier.
