A missing Canadian student's body has been found on the rooftop of a Los Angeles hotel, according to media reports.

The body, which was found in a water tank, is 21-year-old Elisa Lam, a Vancouver resident who had been last staying at the Cecil Hotel.

The victim had checked into to hotel on January 26, but failed to check out and was last seen at the hotel on January 31.

CBS News reports a hotel maintenance worker went to the hotel's roof to examine the water tanks, where the body was found.

Police were experiencing difficulties removing the body from the tank as of Tuesday afternoon.

"It appears that the location of the water tanks is very small and configured in a very tight way so it's a little more difficult to get the body out," said Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police are attempting to figure out if the death was the result of an accident or foul play.
