The Indian government on Wednesday said it had identified 12 coal mining projects with an annual coal production of 36.9 million tonnes for speedy clearances within a month. These projects will entail an investment of Rs.1,347 crore, reports said, quoting Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the Cabinet Committee on Investment (CCI) had streamlined the processes of granting environment and forest clearances for mega projects.
"Clearances for 12 coal mining projects have been fast tracked. These projects would add 37 million tonnes to our annual coal production," Singh said.
The CCI in its meeting in February considered the proposal of Coal Ministry with regard to fast tracking of the approvals for the environment and forest clearances in respect of 12 coal mining projects, according to an official statement.
The Committee noted that in respect of six coal mines, environment clearance was accorded and directed that in respect of remaining cases relating to environment/forest clearances, environment and coal secretaries will hold mutual discussions and finalize within one month, the time-frame for processing such cases, the statement added.
