At least twelve police officials are reportedly missing after gunmen attacked a police boat in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of Nigeria, media reports said.
Reports said that militants opened fire on the boat when it broke down along the the creeks near Azuzama. The attack happened when the police personnel were on an "unspecified special assignment".
A rescue team is searching for the missing persons, while an official of the police department said it is too early to say they are dead. Three police officers and the boat driver were rescued.
The attack, the first major one after many months of calm, come after the Nigerian government last week set up a panel to look into the feasibility of offering an amnesty deal to members of the radical Boko Haram Islamist sect which has carried out numerous terror strikes in the country.
More than 3,500 people are believed to have been killed in the African country in militant attacks since four years ago.
