Poland's retail sales increased at a slower-than-expected pace in March after recording a decline in the previous month, latest data showed Tuesday.

Retail sales edged up 0.1 percent year-on-year in March, reversing the 0.8 percent decrease seen in February, the Central Statistical Office said. Economists had forecast trade to record a slightly faster growth of 0.3 percent.

Sales of food, beverages and tobacco products increased at a notably faster rate of 8.9 percent year-on-year in March than 1.8 percent in February. Meanwhile, sales of automobiles and parts decreased 1.8 percent annually, and sales of textiles, clothing and footwear dropped 7.9 percent.

On a monthly basis, trade in the retail sector climbed 16.8 percent annually in March, following the previous month's 2.6 percent fall, data showed.

Separately, the statistical office said that Poland's unemployment rate decreased to 14.3 percent in March from 14.4 percent in February, while economists expected the jobless rate to stay unchanged.
