Taiwan's exports contracted unexpectedly in April, data published by the Ministry of Finance showed Tuesday.
Exports fell 1.9 percent year-on-year in April to $25.05 billion. This compares with a 3.3 percent increase in the preceding month and a 3.1 percent growth forecast by economists.
Imports fell 8.2 percent from a year earlier to $22.77 billion following a 0.2 percent gain in March. Economists were looking for a 0.3 percent increase.
The trade surplus amounted to $2.27 billion, less than $3.2 billion in March but higher than $719.2 million in April last year.
