The U.S. is a rough place for newborns—potentially a deadly one, as the nation ranks behind 68 other countries in birth day deaths. Every year 1,000,000 infants die after birth, according to Save the Children, more than 11,000 of them die in America.
"The United States has the highest first-day death rate in the industrialized world. An estimated 11,300 newborn babies die each year in the United States on the day they are born. This is 50 percent more first-day deaths than all other industrialized countries combined," wrote the organization in their report.
Save the Children says that contributing factors include poverty, racism, stress and teenage pregnancy.
Finland was the highest ranked on the list followed by Sweden and Norway. All scored high in mother and child overall health, education and economic status. The U.S. had the same first-day mortality rate (per 1,000) births as China, Libya, Tonga and Thailand.
