Director Deepa Mehta, best known for her film "Midnight's Children," has reportedly been enlisted to adapt Shilpi Somaya Gowda's novel "Secret Daughter" for the big screen.

The story centers on two families one in Mumbai, India and the other in San Francisco. The first grapples with their emotions after giving a child up for adoption while the second adjusts to life raising a brown-skinned child in a predominantly white area.

It will be the first project for Mehta following "Midnight's Children," which is adapted from Salmon Rushdie's award winning 1981 novel. Jody Colero of Silent Joe Inc. and Hussain Amarshi of Mongrel Media have both signed on to produce the new project.

Production costs for "Secret Daughter" will be provided in part by Canada's Harold Greenberg Fund.
