A British skier fell to his death after being caught in a storm on the highest mountain in the French Alps.

The tragedy occurred when two men were trapped on the peak of a hill approximately 12,460ft in the air. The cable car of a French ski resort descending the two victims broke down, International Business Times reports.

As the weather worsened with high winds and blizzards picking up, they were forced to evacuate the lift.

One man made it to safety at a nearby lift station. But, the other lost his footing and fell approximately 5,000 feet. His body was later recovered by Mountain rescue crews and a helicopter.

Last week, rescuers found a 21-year-old Frenchwoman in the same mountainous area; she was suffering from hypothermia.
