Bob Dylan was made an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters for his distinction in the creative arts. Dylan was named into the honorary category because the academy was unable to decide which category his work best fit into.

Academy executive director Virginia Dejani explained: "It was decided that he is a very multitalented person whose work was so unusual for what he has accomplished that it defies categorization."

Dylan was unable to attend the Manhattan ceremony, which included a keynote speech from Pulitzer-winning novelist Michael Chabon and award presentation by Meryl Streep, but sent a statement noting:

"I feel extremely honored and very lucky to be included in this pantheon of great individual artists who comprise the Academy of Arts and Letters. I look forward to meeting all of you some time soon."
