David Bowie is paying tribute to his former bassist, Trevor Bolder, who died from cancer at the age of 62 earlier this week. Bolder was part of the famous Spiders from Mars band that backed Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust era.

"Trevor was a wonderful musician and a major inspiration for whichever band he was working with," Bowie posted to his website after hearing the news of Bolder's death. "But he was foremostly a tremendous guy, a great man."

Bolder played bass on four classic Bowie albums during the 1970s - Hunky Dory, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Aladdin Sane and Pinups.

After working with Bowie, Bolder went on to play with Uriah Heep in 1976. He played with the band in two lengthy stints up until his death.
