President Barack Obama is on Tuesday expected to submit three candidates to fill vacancies in the U.S. Court of Appeals in the District of Columbia.

Obama is expected to put forth federal district judge Robert Wilkins, law professor Cornelia Pillard and lawyer Patricia Ann Millett to the appeals court.

Wilkins has served on the federal bench since Obama put him there in 2010. Pillard is a teacher as Georgetown University Law Center and also has been an assistant to the solicitor general and a deputy assistant attorney general. Millett was a lawyer in the solicitor general's office for 11 year.

Given the Republican opposition to many of his appointments, Obama is hoping to have better luck by nominating them as a group.

The 11-member court currently has four Democrats and four Republicans.
