A Texas teenager was attacked by a shark Monday while standing in shallow water along the Gulf coast.

NBC News reports that the teenager, a 15-year-old male, was with his friends at Surfside Beach on the Gulf of Mexico when he felt a bite on his left leg. He tried to fight the shark off by hitting it, but the shark then attacked his left hand and the teenager was left with cuts to his limbs.

The teenager's friends helped him out of the water, while a police officer and medic who were at the scene started giving the teen first aid. The teenager was then airlifted to an area hospital in Houston.

Surfside had not dealt with a shark attack in 25 to 30 years, according to reports, and Assistant Chief of Police Gregg Bisso said that he thinks the arrival of sharks could be as a result of weather conditions.

The teenage boy is being treated for his injuries and are not life threatening.
