Portugal's producer price inflation quickened moderately in May after easing in the previous month, data released by Statistics Portugal showed Wednesday.

The producer price index increased 0.8 percent year-on-year in May, following the previous month's 0.5 percent gain. In March, the index recorded a 1.4 percent growth.

Driving the acceleration, energy prices increased 1.4 percent, indicating an upturn from the previous month when prices remained unchanged year-on-year. At the same time, the annual growth in prices of investment goods quickened to 0.5 percent from 0.4 percent.

However, intermediate goods prices increased at a slower rate of 0.3 percent in May than 0.7 percent in April. Consumer goods prices were higher by 0.8 percent than in May 2012.

Meanwhile, prices in the mining industry and manufacturing sector dropped by 0.1 percent and 0.5 percent respectively from a year earlier.

The producer price index decreased 0.2 percent compared to April, when it slid by 0.3 percent, the agency said.
