Pedestrians in London are being warned about sidewalks exploding.

BBC News reports that health and safety officials are concerned at the rising incidents of pavement explosions occurring throughout the city in recent years.

Five people have been injured in sidewalk explosions since January 2012, CNN is reporting.

The Health and Safety Executive has ordered UK Power Networks to do a major inspection of the city and find causes and fixes for the problem.

One victim, Indran Sivarajah, was walking on a sidewalk in the Shoreditch neighborhood of east London when he heard a large explosion right behind him.

"I turned back and saw a big fire gushing up," Sivarajah said.
"I could feel the heat from it."

One cause is that water and gas may be entering the electricity cable boxes and cabling that runs under the sidewalks.

The Health and Safety Executive said it had been notified of 45 incidents since August of 2012.
